Judy Sherman is a Canadian artist. As a child, Judy's inspirations were Gumby and Michaelangelo. While sitting in front of the television watching cartoons, she would copy Renaissance drawings into her sketchbooks. Later in life this combination inspired her to paint toys in the traditional style she learned while studying in Florence, Italy. "I have always had a great admiration of the Old Masters' paintings. Putting that together with my love of toys has created an interesting juxtaposition and narrative composition in my work" says Sherman. Sherman always works from life. "Color and mood are really important to me. By setting up the still life and adjusting my lighting I am able to create the mood I desire" she says. "Those little touches of color that are revealed by the lighting are what bring my paintings to life."
